Transforming Waste into Art: Our Sustainable Journey

At Metaphor Racha, we take pride in our commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship. For years, hand-block printing has been a cherished craft in our collection because of our exclusive wooden blocks and our dedication to preserving the legacy of the 'unknown block maker.'

A unique aspect of our printing process involves using a thick cotton cloth, locally known as "Achada," laid on the table before printing. This protective layer absorbs excess colour, preventing it from seeping into the wooden table. Given the amount of work involved, this cloth is discarded after every 3 to 4 months.

But what happens to this seemingly waste material? That's where our commitment to sustainability takes centre stage. At Metaphor Racha, we give this 'waste' a new lease on life. We provide our block printers with our ambara charaka handspun and handwoven cotton fabric to use as Achada. After their service, we collect these stained fabrics, turning what many would see as refuse into valuable resources.

These fabrics, adorned with layers of vibrant colours, are brushed and washed, resulting in a material that is not unique but almost waterproof! Each piece becomes a canvas of its own, embodying our printing process's creative spirit and artistic essence.

Our next step is where creativity meets craftsmanship. Local tailor Guddu, a young specialist in designing pouches and bags, transforms these fabrics into home-utilitarian products. Every item is stitched with care, ensuring that the artistic beauty and sustainability of the material are preserved.

By repurposing what would otherwise be discarded, we ensure that nothing goes to waste. More than a dozen skilled hands craft each product, reflecting our dedication to sustainability and local craftsmanship.

We invite you to join us in celebrating this sustainable journey. At Metaphor Racha, we believe in making the most out of every resource and honouring the efforts of those who contribute to our process. Your support helps us continue this mission and reduces waste, positively impacting the environment.

"Crafting is not just about creating; it's about preserving and honouring the legacy of materials and artisans."
