The Complete Guide to Khadi Fabric Care

Khadi requires thoughtful yet minimal care to maintain its charm and longevity. Proper washing, drying, ironing, and storage will keep your garments soft and vibrant. This guide will cover essential tips for managing shrinkage, preventing colour bleeding, and using eco-conscious washing methods that not only keep your Khadi clothing in excellent condition but also contribute to environmental sustainability, a key aspect of the Khadi movement.

Understanding Khadi Fabric

Khadi is a handwoven fabric made from handspun yarn using natural materials like cotton, silk, and wool. It is a remarkably durable fabric that need not be treated with excessive caution, unless it's a very fine-count muslin or has surface embellishments like prints or embroidery.

Does Khadi Fabric Shrink?

Yes, authentic Khadi cotton fabric will shrink by 3 to 5%, depending on its construction. It's always advisable to buy Khadi clothes that are a bit looser. But all our textiles are pre-washed at Metaphor Racha, negating a significant part of shrinkage problems.

Why Does Khadi Fabric Shrink?

The lightly twisted handspun yarn used in the Khadi fabric slightly expands and tends to get closer during the wash, causing shrinkage. On a positive note, this shrinking makes the Khadi fabric soft and supple over time.

How often should Khadi clothes be washed?

It is unnecessary to wash Khadi garments or sarees every time they are used. Khadi cotton fabric breaths well and doesn't retain odors easily, so if not dirtied or stained, they can be re-worn by aerating. This not only saves water and energy but also helps maintain the fabric's quality and longevity.

How do you soften Khadi fabric?

The roughness of the Khadi fabric is due to the starch in the yarn. With 3 to 4 washes, most of the Khadi fabric becomes softer. We do not suggest chemical fabric softeners as they reduce moisture absorbency. Alternatively, adding a small portion of "Soda Ash" during washing accelerates the fabric softening.

How to wash Khadi clothes?

  • Always separate darker and lighter khadi clothes before washing to prevent colour bleeding, if any.
  • If soaking is required, ensure each item is soaked separately to maintain colour integrity.
  • Wash khadi fabrics with mild or no detergents in plain water to protect their natural fibres.
  • Hand-washing is the best method to preserve the quality of khadi fabric.
  • Use a gentle cycle if you are using a washing machine.
  • Always hand-squeeze khadi garments instead of using a machine dryer to retain their shape.
  • For printed or embroidered khadi clothes and sarees, opt for eco-dry cleaning the first time. Subsequent washes can be done at home following the care guidelines.

Drying Khadi Clothes

  • Always dry khadi clothes and sarees in the shade to preserve their colour.
  • Flat drying is the most suitable method to maintain the Khadi fabric's natural shape and structure.
  • Avoid hanging khadi garments on hangers, as this can cause sagging.
  • Use a cotton rope or a non-corrosive steel clothesline to prevent staining or damage during drying.
  • Opt for wooden or steel pegs to secure the garments, ensuring they remain free from rust or plastic residue.

Ironing Khadi Garments and Sarees

  • If needed, lightly spray water to make the fabric easier to press.
  • While khadi fabric can take starch well, we at Metaphor Racha recommend against starching any of our garments or sarees. The natural creases enhance the character of the fabric.
  • Always iron the printed khadi fabric from the back.
  • Place a thin cloth over embroidered portions before ironing to avoid damaging the delicate details.
  • Plastic buttons can melt under high heat. However, Metaphor Racha uses durable, non-corrosive metal buttons.
  • Excess heat can melt the poly-cotton thread used in stitching or cause a shine on the fabric from repeated heavy ironing. To prevent this, use an iron box shoe for even heat distribution and added safety.

Storing Khadi Clothes

Fold and store the Khadi garments, while Khadi lungis and sarees can go on the hanger. Use natural room freshener. Say to to Naphthalene balls.

Maintaining Khadi Clothes

Stain removal: Mixing white vinegar with mild dishwashing soap and warm water can remove most fresh stains. For something stubborn, you might need an expert's help.

Mending: Occasional wear and tear is a part of the clothing journey. We recommend DIY sewing and patchwork repairs that add charm to your favourite Khadi clothing.

Caring for Khadi isn't just about maintaining a material—it's about celebrating rural skill and craftsmanship. With right kind of minimal care, your Khadi clothes will soften, age gracefully, and continue to reflect their natural charm. Whether wearing or mending, every interaction with Khadi adds to its story. Remember, the best way to care for Khadi is to wear it often.
