Fair Taxation for Sustainable Craft Businesses

As a crafterpreneur, I'm comfortable paying GST. My role is to collect tax from the consumer and hand it to the Government. That's it. However, I question the logic behind what gets taxed and how.

1] Elevating Craft Businesses to Tech Status
Ideally, craft businesses with GST should be recognized as a distinctly organized sector on par with tech startups. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Our work with the "Fabric of Freedom" involves every step of cotton production—sourced, ginned, slivered, roved, spun, dyed, woven, printed, embroidered, and tailored entirely within Karnataka—minimizing our carbon footprint. Shouldn't these efforts align with the "Vocal for Local" movement and offer tangible benefits?

2] Sustainable Practices vs. Tech Incentives
MNCs in sectors like electric cars enjoy tax rebates and subsidized land. Significant investments are directed toward rainwater harvesting and renewable energy. Meanwhile, ambara charaka spun and handwoven Kora fabric, requiring minimal energy and water, deserves similar recognition and support.

3] Questioning Tax Uniformity
Why are organic cotton handwoven fabrics taxed at the same rate as synthetic power-loom fabrics laden with toxic chemicals? Sustainable textile production combats pollution, so it should be incentivized.

4] Supporting Rural Craftspeople
Crafterpreneurs have long employed rural craftspeople, paying living wages and curbing urban migration. Should such contributions not merit different taxation policies?

5] Navigating GST Complexities
'One Nation, One Tax' is misleading for small businesses. As a GST-registered business from Bengaluru, promoting Karnataka crafts across other states requires a separate GST number each time. Micro-businesses face a disproportionate burden compared to larger enterprises.

6] Levelling the Playing Field
Retail stores with a turnover below ₹40 lakhs enjoy GST exemptions, but e-commerce craft businesses don't. How can we compete with international giants without a level playing field?

7] Investing in Eco-Sensitive Initiatives
Governmental efforts against climate change must recognize the role of crafterpreneurs in sustaining eco-friendly rural products. Our efforts ignite the farming and craft sectors and should be rewarded.

The journey to sustainable craft production is vital for our economy and environment. By reevaluating our taxation policies, we can create a more equitable landscape for all businesses.
