Empowering Generosity

During a recent trip to Kolkata, I had a unique experience on a full morning flight. Seated next to a young gentleman who fell asleep before takeoff, I observed a curious moment. The stewardess woke him up to take his breakfast order, but he declined, still groggy and in a bad mood, despite his office having booked his meal. Seizing the opportunity, I asked if I could have his meal instead. Perplexed, he agreed, and I chose a box of almonds and mixed fruit juice. Upon landing, I took a cab to my hotel and gave the almonds and juice to the security guard, who was delighted to receive them.

This story isn't about me or a lesson in morality but serves as a gentle reminder of the power of thoughtful giving. Here's a simple request: when staying in a hotel, collect complimentary items such as toiletries, slip-ons, sachets of milk powder, tea, sugar, and ketchup. Include toothbrushes, soap, vaseline, and other items offered in deals or buy-one-get-one-free offers. Additionally, if you have extra bandages, towels, gloves, sanitary pads, and napkins, put them in a pouch to give to those in need. You can always find someone in your neighbourhood who could benefit from these items.

Instead of selling newspapers, magazines, books, plastic items, or bottles straight to the Kabadi Wala, consider giving them to those in need. They can, in turn, sell them to scrap dealers and benefit from the profits.

Before giving away unwanted clothes, consider these tips: take your old, faded saree to be over-dyed or printed, and have any torn clothes darned, button-stitched, or zippers fixed. Make sure to wash and iron all the items before giving them away. By doing this, not only do the giveaways look special, but we also contribute to the livelihoods of skilled workers.

Let's make our acts of generosity graceful and impactful. We can make a meaningful difference in our communities by repurposing and donating everyday items. Together, we can transform simple gestures into powerful acts of kindness.
